How HCG Works

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a naturally occurring peptide hormone produced during pregnancy by syncytiotrophoblast cells. In endocrinology and reproductive research, HCG acts as a biological analog to Luteinizing Hormone (LH) due to structural similarities in their active signaling domains:

• LH Receptor Activation: HCG binds directly to Luteinizing Hormone/Choriogonadotropin Receptors (LHCGR) on Leydig cells in the testes (and granulosa/theca cells in ovaries). It triggers downstream adenylate cyclase activity, raising intracellular cAMP levels.

• Stimulation of Endogenous Testosterone: In male models experiencing hypogonadism or suppression of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, HCG stimulates Leydig cells to resume natural synthesis and secretion of endogenous testosterone.

• Maintenance of Intratesticular Testosterone (ITT): High levels of intratesticular testosterone are critical for supporting normal spermatogenesis. HCG maintains cellular signaling within the seminiferous tubules, preventing testicular atrophy during periods of hormonal suppression.

• Longer Half-Life Than Native LH: While endogenous LH has a short biological half-life (~20–30 minutes), HCG features a unique C-terminal peptide extension decorated with sialic acid residues. This modification extends its circulating half-life to approximately 24–36 hours, providing sustained receptor engagement.
